Responsibilities:

 The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist will provide technical, program development, and implementation support in areas of hazardous waste management, emergency action planning, OSHA compliance, and other EHS-related disciplines related to research labs and office. Primary location will be the 7 Cambridge Center facility.

• Oversee day-to-day activities relating to the biological and hazardous waste programs. Work closely with service vendors, EHS contacts, and lab researchers to ensure compliance. Evaluate new waste streams and determine proper disposal method.
• Participate on a rotating 24/7 on-call EHS emergency response team.
• Encourage teamwork and focus on practical solutions and problem solving.
• Serve in a support role to develop the necessary expertise and good judgement in various broad application EHS Programs.
• Assist in the development of general EHS programs under a variety of federal, state, and local regulations.
• Assist in the development of EHS training programs and train personnel.
• Serve as member of Broad EHS Committee. Assist with the development of meeting presentations and documentation.
• Other duties as directed by the Director and Assistant Director of EHS to meet Broad Institute goals.

Qualifications:

 This position requires general knowledge and basic understanding of environment, health and safety programs and regulations such as OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, Massachusetts DPH and DEP, NFPA Codes, Massachusetts Fire Prevention Regulations, and Massachusetts Building Code.

A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in environment, health and safety programs, and a general knowledge in the recognition, evaluation and control of hazardous materials and physical agents. A bachelor’s degree in an environment, health and safety related discipline, engineering, physical science, biological science/chemistry, or equivalent experience with emphasis in environment, health and safety is required. Specific experience in hazardous waste management or other professional EHS trainings or certifications a plus. Highly proficient computer skills desirable. Ability to make effective oral presentations and work as part of a team are also important.

• Strengthen SBU support by demonstrating and communicating the value of safety to the bottom line of the business.
• Establish and communicate / report on key performance metrics to focus efforts and resources most effectively and drive accountability to results.
• Contribute directly to the safety initiatives and efforts of the SBU by routinely participating at leadership conferences, conference calls, business unit committee meetings, etc.
• Provide frequent analysis and feedback on program execution, accident trends and status of current initiatives
• Integrate safety into existing processes and operations to address accidental losses before they occur; e.g., promotional fixture reviews, etc.
Develop and implement tactical and pragmatic solutions to known hazards and loss exposures. Equip the field operators with the knowledge and tools to operate an effective occupational safety and health program.
• Design, evaluate and manage all company safety programs; e.g., Hazardous Communications, Bloodborne Pathogens, Power Industrial Truck Training and Certification, Fall Prevention, etc.
• Conduct detailed data analysis on large volumes of loss data at least quarterly to identify accident trends, root causes and process improvement opportunities.
• Design and coordinate training, awareness and incentive programs targeted at reducing the leading causes of accidents and other losses.
• Design auditing tools for field execution and oversight of key injury and regulatory areas.
• Conduct comprehensive job hazard assessments of workplace tasks, processes and operations.
Investigate, respond and manage all federal, state and local regulatory matters related to occupational safety and health; e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOL, etc.)
• Provide education and awareness to critical field personnel on how to proactively identify and communicate regulatory issues.
• Leverage field operational teams to effectively manage regulatory inquiries.

• Negotiate settlement agreements to ensure all regulatory matters are resolved amicably.
• Communicate regulatory experiences company wide to control and prevent future loss exposures.
Partner with the claims position(s) to achieve an integrated and seamless transition between pre-loss and post loss programs and expectations. Work collaboratively on reporting procedures, injury management programs and general field training and awareness initiatives. Contribute and support the monthly administration of the company wide Work. Comp. chargeback program.
